Receipt Printers
Add and manage your clinic's receipt printers, route departments to specific printers, and control which receipts print automatically.
Manage the printer fleet reception uses for patient receipts. Go to Settings → Receipt Printers (dentare.io/clinic/settings/printers) to add printers, set up department routing, and decide which receipts print on their own.
This page is for counter printers only, not your fiscal device. Fiscalization has its own setup - see Fiscalization.
Add a Printer
Open Receipt Printers settings
Go to Settings → Receipt Printers and click Add printer. Give the printer a name and, optionally, a location (for example "Front desk" or "Reception 2").
Choose a printer type
Dentare supports three printer types:
- Epson (network) - a networked Epson receipt printer the browser talks to directly over your LAN.
- BIXOLON (Web Print) - a BIXOLON printer connected through BIXOLON's Web Print helper, installed once on the reception computer.
- Generic (ESC/POS via Dentare Print Agent) - any other ESC/POS printer, connected over network, USB, or serial through the Dentare Print Agent (see The Print Agent).
Enter connection details
The fields change based on the printer type you picked:
- Epson: model, the printer's IP address on your local network, and its port (default 8008). If the printer asks for an SSL connection, set the port to 8043 instead.
- BIXOLON: follow the guided setup - download the BIXOLON helper, install it on the reception computer, add the printer inside the helper, then enter that printer's logical name here and pick the paper width (58mm, 80mm, or 112mm).
- Generic ESC/POS: choose the connection (Network, USB, or Serial). For network, enter the printer's IP and port; for USB or serial, enter the device name or COM port. Set a code page override only if receipts print garbled characters. Pick the paper width. If more than one computer is paired to the Print Agent, choose which one this printer prints through.
Save and test print
Toggle Active and click Save printer. Then click Print test receipt on the printer row to confirm it works. For Epson and BIXOLON, the browser prints directly and shows a success or failure message. For a generic ESC/POS printer, the job goes through the Print Agent on the reception computer, and a status banner on the row shows it sending, printed, or failed.
Manage Your Printer Fleet
The clinic's first printer becomes the default automatically. To make a different printer the default, click the star icon on its row.
Each printer row also has:
- Check status (Epson and BIXOLON only) - checks the printer live and shows a colored status chip: Online, Offline, Cover open, Paper low, Paper out, or Can't reach the printer. If the browser cannot use the printer's SSL port, the chip reads Your connection needs the SSL port - set the printer's port to 8043 and check again.
- Edit - change the name, location, connection details, or active state.
- Remove - deletes the printer after a confirmation.
A generic ESC/POS printer instead shows a heartbeat chip reflecting the Print Agent computer it routes through: Online, Reconnecting, or Can't reach, plus a Needs a computer chip if no computer is paired yet.
Route Departments to Printers
Once your clinic has two or more printers, a Department routing panel appears below the fleet. Assign each department's receipts to a specific printer:
- Stomatology - your clinic's main department, always available.
- Dental lab - only shown if your clinic runs a lab.
- X-Ray - only shown if your clinic runs X-ray.
Leave a department on Clinic default to send its receipts to the default printer. Changes save automatically.
Automatic Receipt Printing
This section is visible to the clinic owner only.
The owner can choose which non-fiscal receipt types the printer fleet is allowed to produce:
- Checkout receipts - printed when a patient pays, and on every reprint.
- Patient balance slips - the outstanding and credit slips printed from a patient's balance.
- Appointment slips - printed for a patient with their next appointment.
Turning a switch off stops that receipt type from printing, but two things always print regardless of these settings: fiscal receipts, because fiscalization is a legal requirement, and the test receipt, so you can always check a printer is working.
The Print Agent
If your clinic has the Print Agent enabled, a Print agent panel appears at the bottom of the page. The Print Agent is a small helper installed on a reception computer that lets Dentare print to a generic ESC/POS printer the browser cannot reach on its own.
Pairing a computer
With no computer paired yet, download the installer and click Pair a computer. Name the computer (for example "Reception PC"), and Dentare generates a pairing code:
- Install the Dentare Print Agent on the reception computer.
- Open it - a small window appears.
- Type in the code and select Connect.
The code is shown as large text with a 15-minute countdown, and you can generate a new one if it expires. Once the computer connects, the panel switches to the connected view on its own.
Agent status
Each paired computer shows a status chip:
- Online - the agent is sending a recent heartbeat.
- Reconnecting - its heartbeat has gone quiet briefly.
- Offline - no heartbeat for longer, shown in gray.
- Needs attention (degraded, amber) - printing paused after repeated failures. Click Resume printing after checking the printer.
A blue Update available pill appears if the computer is running an older Print Agent version than expected.
Rename or revoke a computer
Use the pencil icon to rename a paired computer, or the trash icon to revoke it. Revoking asks for confirmation and stops that computer from printing until you pair it again.
